Public Comment on the concept for Willow Dog Park has ended. Thank you!

The Parks Department is holding an in-person on-site open house for the Dog Park at Willow Park on Wednesday, September 21st from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Bring your dog for a treat and to meet other excited dog lovers!

The address for Willow Park is 9800 West 300 North. The location of the dog park is highlighted in blue below.

The purpose of the open house is to allow residents to provide suggestions for the placement of amenities within the park (benches, dog run features, shade structures, etc.) and to answer questions. The purpose is not to redesign the park or make major changes to the updated design. We received great feedback at our previous open house and made changes to reflect it!

We look forward to your input and working together to create a great park for the canine community!

The UPDATED design can be accessed on the sidebar under documents -->.

I would love to see some sort of controlled entrance that requires registration of the dogs and owners. Something that would enable the city to better identify what dogs were there at particular times in case of an aggressive incident or illness. I would even be willing to make it a pay for usage like many other city services, the Legacy Center for example. There must be some sort of water available for the dogs to drink. benches around the perimeter with shade would be very nice. Pet waste receptacles and bags to encourage owners to clean up after their pet.

-Ensure entrance is double-gated (can't tell if that is shown here)
-Definitely need a small dog area.
-As others have mentioned, water features cause a lot of sickness if untreated, so I purposefully avoid dog parks with standing water.
-Canopy shades are great if not enough pavilion/tree coverage is available.
-Make sure the cement/asphalt area is treated in a way that it doesn't get too hot for dog paws. Honestly, I'm not sure I understand why there is such a large cement area anyway - seems like it will just get dirty and just cause issues. A sidewalk would be fine and I'd assume less expensive.
-Keep in mind all-weather conditions - dogs need parks to run around in during the cold months too!
-The more benches the better, seems like there are never enough, and sitting in grass at a dog park means you will likely sit in pee/poo, so not really a great option.

A small dog area is a must for me. Also, I will mention that my dog can squeeze around or under gates at some other poorly-designed/maintained dog parks in the area. It would be really nice if the small dog area had enough room for them to also run around on grass.

Are we going to have a water feature for dogs that love to swim? That is a necessity for us.

Cindy over 2 years ago

A small dog area for safety reasons. Small dogs may feel overwhelmed among a bunch of big dogs. Also some big dogs have a “prey drive” for small animals that could result in small dogs getting chased or bitten by bigger ones.

Spanish Fork Dog park has two sections that are rotated to give the grass a rest(I'm assuming that's the reason). I also agree small dogs need a separate little area. As for water, just a faucet for filling bowls people bring themselves is all that's really needed. Larger water features are just too problematic.

Adelinda Davis over 2 years ago

-no water feature
-no pavilion
Other than that adding a small dog section and some more trees this looks like it will be a great dog park! Thank you Lehi City

Love the proposal and the desire to get feedback on it. The water feature is the only dealbreaker to me. Our dogs have gotten giardia multiple times from Dayland dog park in draper. It's unnecessary and just gets the dogs messier. Otherwise it seems like a great park! Just keep it simple. There's a lot of suggestions for some crazy things. Our favorite park is the memorial park in Herriman because of the open area, nothing crazy like agility courses.

I live by willow park and also own Elite Turf Supply. We are a premium artificial turf wholesale supplier. Let me know if we can supply/install the turf for the city.

A smaller separate area for small dogs is necessary for owners to feel comfortable as well as for small house dogs to socialize appropriately.
Some ground cover in low points of the area (that doesn't need to be mowed, think peanut grass) would be nice so that the dogs don't end up too muddy from playing in the stream and on the dirt. This would help with less water usage at the wash stations.
Creating a training obstacle course in some of the open space would also be helpful to encourage will trained animals. Adding a bullseye pattern in the gravel for ball toss could be fun for training/recall/etc.

I would love to see some sports course/agility course if possible. Our dog loves to go into these courses

I too would be so happy to see a dog park in Lehi! Where would this be located? It looks so big! Like other commenters, I think the water feature would be problematic. It would be nice to not only have some kind of covered structure for pet owners to gather, but also benches scattered throughout. Shade is definitely a must, wherever possible, as is a separate small-dog section. Thank you!

Thank you for making the lehi dog owner community a park! I agree with previous comments no water feature. No picnic tables just plenty of benches. Doubly gated entrance. Small dog area. These are all great ideas. I love the trail, wash area and lots of grass for dogs to run. Agility play area is a bonus. I will be so happy to have a nice dog park close to home! Thank you again! I look forward to seeing the results

There should be no picnic tables under one large pavilion; instead several small pavilions with benches. Picnic tables would encourage human food being brought in which could cause illness or fighting among the dogs. There should also be benches placed all along the asphalt path instead of just in one place. Adding a tunnel or ramps for the dogs would be great as well. Definitely needs a double gate entrance and a separate fenced off area for the little dogs. Also a few of the drinking fountains that have a place for humans and a low place for the dogs to drink from. A dog park will be a great addition to Lehi city. I think leaving the large trees that are there as well as adding others for shade is great.

I would really like the water feature to use treated water. The Draper dog park does not and I have heard about many dogs getting sick from giardia. Once your dog is in the water, you can't really stop them from drinking it. I do like the water feature idea! It helps keeps pups cool while they are playing. Maybe a pond would be easier to keep clean, since they could not stand in it and go potty. You could put in a little dock so that they could jump into the pond.

I think there should also be an agility course. I agree that we need more benches and more shade. It would be really nice if parts of the walking path were shaded so that the asphalt was cooler for paws.

Small dog area is a great idea and probably necessary for many owners to use the dog park.

Maybe another entry point?

Also, I hope trash cans are all over the park to help owners clean up.

I think having the donated bricks at the entry might be more exciting than having them under a pavilion.

It's so exciting that Lehi is considering a dog park! I agree with other comments regarding the water feature; dogs would often get sick and it would become so muddy. Double gates, no pavilion, and more benches throughout.

I’m so happy there will be a good dog park in lehi! Thanks for all the planning I would love to give my input!

I’ve been to a lot of dog parks and I’ve realized the more simple it is, the better. Around utah county I honestly feel like Spanish forks is the best, literally just grass with lots of shade trees, divided by a fence so that as one area gets worn they can have people use the other side while it recovers. There is a shared agility course between the two sides. I just think grass is the nicest and least messy and the dogs love it! I would agree with other people, the more shade the better, lights would be awesome so we could use it after dark when the evenings are short, I agree with the no water feature, and that’s about it! Thank you so much for asking for people’s opinions we can’t wait!

Jamie over 2 years ago

I don’t think a pavilion with tables is a good idea. People will bring in food, which is an issue for a number of reasons.

I would not have a water feature. Draper has one and I won’t go to that park anymore because of how likely dogs are to get sick from it. I also don’t like having a muddy dog.

More benches and trees throughout.

I would have a small separate area for small dogs.

I would have double gates/fencing at all of the entrances.

A pump spigot for water.

Lboulter over 2 years ago

- No water feature. Dogs can get sick.
- Scrap the pavilion and offer lots of benches (with shade!) Around the perimeter.
- Separate area for large and small dogs.
- Sod. Other options can get messy and dog’s paws can be sensitive. If it’s too hot for a person barefooted then it’s also too hot for a dog.
- There are also tons of Goathead burrs at Willow park. Sod would also help mitigate this.
- Double gate.
- Rinse station.
- Signage with rules and ways to report offenders.
- Dog poop bags in several spots around the park.
- THANK YOU!! We appreciate your efforts to collect feedback!

The big park in Spanish Fork is awesome and has a lot of visitors! There is tons of shade, and a lot of green grass. They separate the park into two so each side has a chance to recover.

There also needs to be a good many trees. The dogs pee on them, and when they all pee on the same one the smell is overwhelming.
A water fountain for the dogs is great in the summer .
I would also suggest more xeroscaping than grass as Lehi keeps pushing water conservation.
Multiple entrances so people can get in and out and parents who have to wrestle, or train their pups to wait a little more don't "block traffic."
