This item received a positive recommendation from the Planning Commission and will go to City Council on October 10, 2023.

The City proposes a change to allow detached accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on third acre lots. ADUs are separate living quarters that can be rented to people who are not family. Many of these are basement apartments also known as mother-in-law suites. Detached ADUs are in a separate building that is smaller than the home. These are currently allowed on lots that are 22,000 square feet in size. If the proposed change is approved they will be allowed on lots that are 15,000 square feet in size.

Other proposed changes to the Code include removing the attached garage requirement and instead requiring two off street parking spots that are at least 9x20 feet in size (the standard size of a parking stall).

The change also includes different setback requirements. It would allow buildings that are one story or under 20 feet in height to be 10 feet away from the side and rear property lines. Anything that is two stories or more than 20 feet in height will need to meet the standard setbacks for the zone the lot is in.
