Yes, the city does consider shade sails over playgrounds to help with those hot summer temperatures! We try to incorporate these into future playground designs where it makes sense as we feel they are also an important design and functional element for play. Unfortunately, they are also very costly. Although it is a fairly simple structure, it consists of engineered structural steel poles that must be significantly taller than the play structures. The reinforced concrete footings have to be rated to support the weight of the shade sails under wind and Utah snow loads. These are then given commercial building requirements and placed in a children’s play area with very specific safety requirements. As we replace older playground structures throughout town, we also have to balance how much budget we have to work with and what elements to spend it on. We strive to provide great amenities in our parks and appreciate this feedback.

Has the family park plan actually been fully funded?

In June 2021, Lehi City Council voted to allocated $5million towards the design and construction of the family park. Until plans are developed past a very preliminary concept, as presented here, it is unknown exactly what elements of these funds will be used for. It is anticipated that this will be the first of multiple phases due to the size of this park. We look forward to further developing the plans with all the community input we've been receiving!
