Consultation has concluded

Lehi City is updated the Code requirements for where internal ADU's (accessory dwelling units, i.e. mother-in-law apartments) are allowed in the City. This change proposes to show where internal ADU's are not allowed by a map. The decision on where to restrict ADUs is based on limited utility capacity in those areas. If you have any questions or comments, please talk to us below.

Great question, we say "mother in law apartment" because more people seem to have heard of that then an Accessory Dwelling Unit. Based on the Development Code, you do not need a separate permit if you have family living with you (i.e. your mother in law). We only require a permit if you are creating a separate dwelling area to rent to people who are not family.  An accessory dwelling unit requires some sort of kitchen area as well as bathroom and bedroom.

We also have some separate requirements if it is a detached building like an apartment over a garage. Those require a permit whether they are rented to family or unrelated people.
