Development Code Amendment 23- EMD Signs
This received a positive recommendation from the Planning Commission and will go to City Council on January 11th.
The applicant requests review and recommendation of a proposed amendment to Chapter 23 of the Development Code. The proposed Development Code amendment addresses two separate situations within the Chapter relating to signs.
The first part of the amendment is to expedite the review and approval of smaller electronic display sign conversions and installations. The change proposes to allow Staff to approve signs with less than 50 square feet of electronic display if they meet Code requirements, including size and lighting standards. The Planning Commission would still review signs with more than 50 square feet of electronic display. These larger signs would typically be pylon signs.
The second part of the amendment is to allow for more flexibility within the approvals of pylon signs. The amendment would clarify that the Planning Commission can grant approval of signs with only one support pole if the pole cover meets a minimum 48 inch wide standard. Signs with two poles, will need individual covers that are 36 inches wide.
Previously, the intent of this two-support pole requirement was to avoid signs that have a skinny pole in the middle with a sign on it. However, pylon signs have been approved in the past with one support pole that are given the appearance of two. A wider support pole can provide a similar appearance to two support poles.
